Recycling our old mobile is something we all mean to get round to doing. But when we get our shiny new smartphone home, we can’t really be bothered with the old one, so we chuck it in a drawer and forget about it. It now qualifies as a ‘spare’. It joins the previous generations of ‘spares’ squabbling for space in a drawer with cables, tangled headphones and other electronic debris. By the time we become less obsessed with the shiny new phone and seriously consider disposing of the old one, we assume it’s obsolete and worthless.

This is simply not true. If old, unwanted or broken mobile phones hold no value, why is there such demand from recycling companies for them?

The fact is, most handsets can be refurbished. Statistics show that only about 3 or 4% of phones collected by recycling companies are beyond repair costing more than the phone is worth.

As a phone arrives with a recycling company, it undergoes rigorous testing, starting with a check of its IMEI number to ensure that it’s not been lost or stolen. Then, components such as the keypad are checked. Many phones are then passed to specialist repair centres. Some of these refurbished phones are then issued as replacements by insurance companies to people who claim for loss of, or damage to, their mobile. Others are sent to poorer countries to help people who wouldn’t otherwise have use of a phone to stay in contact with relatives or business contacts.

Even handsets that are beyond repair are worth something. They contain small quantities of metals such as platinum, gold, silver and copper which may end up as jewellery. Batteries contain nickel which can be combined into stainless steel to make saucepans and other metal items. Plastics can be melted down to be made into everyday items such as traffic cones.

So you see, those old forgotten handsets that lurk at the back of cupboards and drawers are really very useful indeed. Why not dig them out, do a good deed for the environment and poorer communities and make a little cash for yourself into the bargain? Why not read the top 5 reasons to recycle your mobile.

Are you bored with your current mobile phone? Perhaps it’s broken or the functions on it no longer meet your needs. Are you considering treating yourself to a shiny, new smartphone like some of your mates have, but finding it difficult to justify the cost?

We’re here to pour salve on your conscience. The cost may not be as much as you think, when you take into account the fact that it’s possible to make money by selling your old phone to a mobile recycling site for cash. Many popular handsets sell for £100-£500, which is a huge amount to put towards a newer, smarter phone for you.

Even if you buy a new mobile to replace a broken phone, you can still sell the faulty handset. Depending on what the fault is, it is possible to get almost as much for it as a you would for a working phone. Of course you will want to make sure you’re offered the best price, which is where where a mobile phone recycling price comparison site comes in very useful.

With mobile phone recycling price comparison sites, you simply search for your old phone’s make and model and within a few seconds you’ll be able to see all the best deals on offer from leading mobile phone recycling companies. You can also find companies who offer free postage, free packaging, which accessories you’ll need to send with your phone (if any) and how long payment is expected to take.

Even if your current phone doesn’t need replacing, chances are you will have at least one old mobile around the house somewhere. So, rummage all those cupboards and desk drawers and get your old mobiles in the post to a mobile recycling company. You’ll be doing yourself and the environment a favour.

It is estimated that an average of four mobile phones lay unused in every household in the UK and the numbers are increasing. Considering many people upgrade their handset every 12 – 18 months, that’s a lot of redundant mobiles to dispose of. So what can we do to help reduce the impact of the disposal of these phones on the environment?

Basically, there are two options available to anyone wishing to dispose of an old phone in an environmentally-friendly way: Re-use or recycle with Cash For Phones.

Let’s look at re-using first. You don’t need your old phone any more and your mates certainly don’t want your old cast-offs; they have their own trendy phones. So how do you get it to someone who can make use of it?

The answer is simply to sell it to one of the myriad of companies who deal in used mobile phones. Fixed installation lines in developing countries are often way too expensive for ordinary people to afford, or quite simply non-existent in many areas. These companies send unwanted phones to countries such as China, Africa, Pakistan and India where they help people to stay in touch and develop businesses, helping to sustain local economies.

So, on to recycling. When old handsets and batteries are condemned to landfill, the decaying phones break down and can release poisonous chemicals into the surroundings. Recycling prevents this danger to our health and environment.

Old handsets also contain precious metals. When a phone is recycled, these can be retrieved and re-used, reducing the impact of mining for these metal on our planet.

Both re-using and recycling help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions produced during the manufacturing process of new handsets.

Armed with this information, why not send your phone to a company who can recycle it safely for you, make yourself a little cash and get a nice warm, fuzzy feeling inside?

Why is recycling your old mobile such a good idea? Wouldn’t it be less effort just to chuck it in the bin? We’ve put together a list of the top five reasons to cash it, not trash it.

Probably the most obvious, is to make extra money. There are a multitude of companies out there who will buy old mobile phones for cash or vouchers. Even broken handsets can roll in the cash.

It’s good for the environment. Recycling your old phone keeps it out of landfill. Poisonous elements such as lead, cadmium and beryllium are present in mobile handsets and these can harm wildlife as well as creating a health hazard health, so the fewer that enter landfills the better.

It can help people in poorer countries. Mobile recycling companies send some of the handsets they collect to these countries, where they are a vital link for people who otherwise couldn’t get their hands on a phone.

The manufacture of just one mobile phone uses the equivalent energy of almost 40 gallons of petrol. The more mobile phones that are recycled, the more we energy we conserve, protecting our rapidly decreasing energy resources.

Mobile phones contain small quantities of precious metals such as gold, platinum and palladium. With an estimated 80 million phones worldwide lying around unused, that’s a lot of precious metals that could be recycled, reducing the impact of mining for these metals on the environment.
